Update on CYO Basketball from the Diocese of Metuchen

Subject: Winter Sports - Announcement

In collaboration with the Vicar General, the Diocesan Schools Office, the Secretariat for Family & Pastoral Life and the Diocesan General Counsel, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Winter 2020- 2021 Indoor Sports Season for elementary school students. This decision is grounded in Guidance for Sports ActiviNes, published by the NJ Department of Health and most recently updated on 11/2/20, which indicates that sports in ind oor settings "carry significant risks." Just this past week, with a spike in COVID-19 cases in New Jersey, Governor Murphy imposed  a suspension of interstate indoor youth sports tournaments and games.

The primary responsibility of the elementary schools in the Diocese of Metuchen is to ensure formation and education of all students while ensuring their health and safety to the greatest possible extent.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring a safe and healthy environment has required extraordinary efforts on the part of school personnel, most notably principals, teachers and maintenance staff. In some cases, schools are using their gymnasiums for alternate purposes as adaptations for school operations (e.g. cafeteria or classroom space). To date, these efforts have been effective in mitigating the risk of the spread of COVID-19. However, as cases of COVID-19 continue to increase in New Jersey, ongoing vigilance is needed. We must keep the children of our parishes/schools safe.

Another factor in our decision is that indoor spaces require professional cleaning protocols. Use of gymnasiums for winter sports would incur additional costs for the schools to undertake these protocols. It is also imprudent and impractical to place the burden of accountability and liability in the high risk environment of interscholastic competition on volunteer coaches.

In our discussions with Diocesan leaders, the decision has also been made that there should be NO type of clinics or intramurals occurring in our school gymnasiums or parish facilities at this time. This is for everyone's wellbeing.

The loss of winter sports can be understandably disappointing to students and all who support them. I would like to thank all of you for the work that has been done in anticipation of having a full year of sports. In particular, I would like to thank Bob Berger, the diocesan CYM Coordinator, for all of his hard work in preparing readiness plans in anticipation of the basketball season. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 data and evaluate if there are safe options that might help us to reconsider om decision as well as the possibility of offering basketball at a later time.

Thank you for yom cooperation in this matter.
